Gorgeous world, new mechanics, amazing music, lots of quests, and quite a few mysteries to unravel! Highly recommend a guide though.Try to forget about the first SaGa Frontier. To actually answer your question though, I might recommend Minstrel Song. 7 starts and stops to really click and fall in love with the game - and even then, I still cheat 😆 but in the end, it's all about what's fun for you. I don't fault anyone for not liking the game - it took my like. It's like dwarf fortress, cataclysm, dark souls - eventually, the game becomes a playground for you to find your own fun, if you want it to. While the first time you play the game it will be obtuse and seemingly impossible and possible to even softlock yourself, eventually once you know the ins and outs it's quite easy - which is why the open-endedness of the game becomes so attractive to people - can i beat the game without magic? ONly gun users? only monsters? what if I try using the opposite magic schools i usually use? etc etc. Your resources are the available treasure dungeons, characters you can recruit, and a few unique side quests.Įvery character has a few things only they get to do, or abilities only they get to use, which keeps things a bit fresh - but the majority of the game no matter what character you play will involve the same kind of prep: Going to treasure dungeons and getting loot, searching for your endgame party, doing magic quests, picking weapon types, grinding for stats. Your restrictions generally what characters you can't bring, the story bits that are in your way, unique and non-unique bosses. Instead, it's more like "Given these restrictions and resources, beat this unique challenge" And how you go about doing that is completely open ended.

It's not about the things other JRPGs generally are about - Telling a story, leading the player to a series of ordered challenges, memorable characters, etc. Yes, your issues with the game are genuine. But if I'm having this strong of a negative reaction to SaGa Frontier, is this maybe just not the series for me? Or do other SaGa games feel really different in comparison?ĮDIT: Just wanted to note in the OP that this community is awesome thanks for the informative responses, everybody! It's a fascinating game and I'm overall glad to have played it. And then Astellus started off really strong- until I found myself back in Koorong, re-completing the same busy work I've already finished five times. It certainly doesn't help that I just got through Riki, which felt almost spiteful in how obtuse it was. And the worldbuilding has a lot of moving parts which don't seem to gel together. I want to latch on to the characters, but they almost all come across super flat to me. The storytelling feels really thin and underdeveloped. (Before I criticize, I want to make clear that I'm describing issues I felt personally & I'm not attacking anyone who loves the game!) I felt like SaGa Frontier was going to be a slam dunk for me. PS1 JRPGs hold a special place in my heart, and Tomomi Kobayashi's art absolutely melts my brain.
I love oddball games, janky games, experimental games, etc. I've already played through Emelia, Red, T260G, Blue, and Riki, as well as doing their Fuse chapters I'm going in New Game on each chapter and then using that chapter's last save for NG+ on Fuse.
I'm playing through SaGa Frontier Remastered on the Switch right now, and I'm not far from the end.
